Arlington Nonprofit Assistance Center Opens On March 30, Arlington Economic Development hosted the grand opening of the new Arlington Nonprofit Assistance Network, a program designed to address both the governance and the management of community-based nonprofits including arts organizations, community assistance programs and other nonprofit organizations. The Nonprofit Assistance Center will provide educational courses on legal basics, fundraising, and strategic planning, and an executive coaching program.

Governor Tim Kaine announced in March that Virginia has been designated as America’s most business-friendly state in the annual independent study, Top Ten Pro-Business States: America’s Economy in the 21st Century. The evaluation of state and federal economic development policies was produced by a top U.S. corporate relocation firm, Pollina Corporate Real Estate, Inc. Just last August, Virginia also placed first among the 50 states in a ranking of the “Best States for Business” by Forbes.com
Arlington Convention & Visitor Service Helps Promote Local Shopping and Dining The Arlington Convention and Visitors Service (ACVS) held its first-ever Concierge College on March 20. Designed specifically for concierges and guest services/front desk staff within the Arlington hotel community, the ACVS Concierge College provided valuable information about Arlington’s wealth of attractions, restaurants, stores, and transportation options. This knowledge will not only help front-line personnel better serve business and leisure travelers, it will also help direct spending toward Arlington businesses.

Rosetta Stone Moves to Arlington for Proximity, Talent After looking at spaces in Reston and Ballston, CEO Tom Adams chose Rosslyn for its central location and public transportation. An eight-person sales office in Fairfax was rolled into the Rosslyn office, an 8,000-square-foot space at 1101 Wilson Blvd.

Business/Military Cooperation Benefit Enlisted Soldiers at Ft. Myer Thanks to a new program called Patriot Passes, many more soldiers from Fort Myer could soon have the opportunity to enjoy complimentary tickets to attend local college and professional games, concerts, theater shows and other hard-to-get events. The Patriot Passes program is sponsored by Buck & Associates and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, working in conjunction with Army officials.
Arlington-Based PBS Names John McCoskey as First CTO John McCoskey, a former executive at Comcast, has been named the first CTO at Arlington-based PBS, the public broadcasting entity serving 355 noncommercial television stations. At PBS, McCoskey will oversee broadcast technology and IT systems, managing a team of 130 employees.
Battlespace Awarded Aircraft Maintenance Contract
Battlespace Flight Services LLC., Arlington, Va., is being awarded a $11,501,250 contract for organizational maintenance support for the Predator MQ-1 aircraft and related systems at Creech Air Force Base and deployed sites worldwide.
Gemalto to Provide 3.5 Million Transit Payment Devices to Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority
Gemalto will supply transit payment devices to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for its historic CharlieCard electronic ticketing initiative. Gemalto is providing 3.5 million secure contactless transit smart cards to the MBTA for the program, enhancing the convenience and speed of service for public transportation in the Boston area.
AED Puts China Delegation on Ice
On March 15th, Arlington Economic Development assisted the Arlington-based International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) in conducting a tour of the ice refrigeration unit at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex for a delegation from the Chinese Association of Refrigeration. The delegation of 8 represented the Chinese Association of Refrigeration, universities, food and refrigeration equipment companies. AED's Tom Newman conducted the tour of the 230 ton refrigeration plant and AED's multi-talented regional economist Isabelle Xu provided translation services.
Decision Lens Expands in Arlington
Decision Lens, a leading provider of decision making software solutions, announced that it has expanded to new offices in Ballston. The new facility will allow Decision Lens to add new employees, utilize state-of-the-art technology and networking capabilities, and offer training and facilitation facilities for more services and to continue to post strong growth. Beacon to Sell Rosslyn Portfolio Beacon Capital Partners is selling a portfolio of at least 10 buildings, concentrated mostly in Rosslyn, but also including assets in Fairfax Center and Tysons Corner, for a reported $502 per square foot. Broadway Real Estate Partners is under contract to acquire the portfolio, which includes 1000 Wilson Boulevard, 1101 Wilson Boulevard, 1200 Wilson Boulevard, 1401 Wilson Boulevard, 1501 Wilson Boulevard, 1400 Key Boulevard, and 1701 N. Fort Myer Drive in Rosslyn.
JSC Leases Space in Crystal
Jorge Scientific Corp. (JSC) agreed to lease 28,695 square feet on the fourth floor at 2231 Crystal Drive. JSC signed a 10-year transaction and plans to occupy the space in May. The 465,998-square-foot, Class A building was constructed in 1987 and is part of the Crystal Park complex. It is 95% leased, with available space marketed for $37.00 per square foot.
PTO Renews in Crystal The United States Patent & Trade Office signed a renewal at 2800 Crystal Drive for 160,000 square feet. The PTO extended its lease an additional two years at the 10-story, Class A building.

Korman to Open AKA Long-Stay Hotel Residence in Arlington The new AKA division of Korman Communities will open its new extended-stay property, AKA: Arlington at 3409 Wilson Blvd. Dubbed “the next generation of luxury accommodations,” the AKA brand features furnished apartments in prime locations, with four star hotel-quality services and resort-style amenities.
Arlington to Host Jamestown Exhibition
As part of America’s 400th Anniversary Celebration, the Arlington Committee on Jamestown 2007 has arranged with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, to feature a month-long showing of the exhibition, Uncovering Home: A Visual Essay on Jamestown Archaeology. The exhibition will begin on May 2 at the Arlington Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St.

The Virginia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (VACVB) Tourism Summit & Annual Meeting will take place April 23-25 at Smith Mountain Lake. Queen Elizabeth to Visit Virginia for Jamestown Anniversary
Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine released a statement on the announcement from Buckingham Palace that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, and His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, will visit Virginia May 3-4, 2007, in recognition of the 400th anniversary of Jamestown.
