Free Y2K preparedness
seminar for small businesses set for May 29 . . .
Arlington's Ad Hoc Committee on Y2K preparedness has put together a
seminar for small businesses struggling with Y2K issues. Presenters
will cover what small businesses must do to be compliant, how to develop
a contingency plan and how to access funds the federal government has
set aside to lessen the burden for small business. The seminar is perfect
for small businesses that have just begun considering Y2K issues. All
attendees will receive a Y2K preparedness kit. Presenters include:

DC metro area
is the 4th most wired city in U.S. . . .
According to an article in the March 1999 issue of Yahoo! Internet Life,
the DC metro area ranks above Boston, Dallas, San Jose, Portland and
New York in terms of "wiredness." How wired a city scored was based
on things like residential Net use, business Net use, density of networked
computers, density of Net businesses and quality of city-related resources

Developer announces
plans for Sears site . . .
Chicago-based McCaffery has purchased the former Sears site in Clarendon.
A contract for the sale was signed March 29. The developer will put
forth the proposal to the County in June.
Demolition makes
way for Courthouse Tower . . .
The wrecking ball has been busy at 1515 N Courthouse Road where The
Holladay Group is erecting the 12-story, 248,000 SF Courthouse Tower
office building. Marty Almquist with Grubb & Ellis, the leasing agent,
reports that occupancy is planned for September 2000. The building also
will include about 14,000 SF of retail space.
Smart Building
may expand . . .
The owners of 1801 N. Lynn Street have put forth a proposal that would
amend the site plan by adding two floors of office space and one floor
of parking to the project. Also part of the plan is the upgrade of street-level
retail of International Place, adjacent to the site, and improvement
of retail areas along Lynn Street & Wilson Boulevard. The amendment
is set for review at the July 10 County Board meeting.
Proposal set
forth for Potomac Yard to enter phased development . . .
Commonwealth Atlantic Properties has put forth a proposal to develop
the south tract site with approximately 4.4 million SF of space, consisting
of two-thirds office/commercial use and one-third residential/hotel
use. The proposal is for approximately 2.9 million SF of residential/hotel
space, including 800 residential units and 625 hotel rooms. Also proposed
is the development of approximately 240,000 SF of office space on the
north tract site. The remaining 38 acres of the North Tract site would
be dedicated to the County for public park purposes. The County Board
should hear this request in late summer.
Clarendon Post
Office proposal moves forward . . .
The US Postal Service has proposed a rezoning and site plan approval
to develop an approximately 250,000 SF office building on the block
bound by Washington, Highland, Hudson and 10th. The project includes
more than 59,000 SF dedicated to the Post Office. The project would
involve the clustering of several zip code/delivery areas, including
Rosslyn, Courthouse and Ballston, in a new Post Office facility. These
existing facilities would remain open as retail post offices space.
