Partnering with the Disabled Community

Arlington has actively sought out organizations within the disabled community as user groups for the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, offering them free ice time for clinics and tournaments. By any measure, Arlington is a leader in this endeavor: No other ice rink in the Washington, D.C. region has actively sought out and offered free ice time, on a consistent basis, to these groups. In the first 6 months the Kettler Capitals Iceplex has been opened, Arlington will donate approximately 70 hours of ice time, and will host the International Special Hockey Festival.

Project Information

  • Construction for the facility began March 2005. The facility opened in November 2006.
  • The 144,000 square foot facility is located atop the existing seven-story public parking garage adjacent to the Ballston Common Mall at the corner of North Glebe Road and North Randolph Street.
  • Two indoor NHL regulation sized ice rinks will provide an estimated 11,500 hours of ice-time per year while providing space for meetings, parties and other events. The Capitals practice rink accommodates about 1,200 spectators. NHL rinks measure 200 feet by 85 feet. Olympic sized rinks measure 200 feet by 100 feet - 15 feet wider but the same length.
  • The facility will also house office space; media facilities; and additional space for special events; a 20,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art training center for the Capitals with a large weight and fitness room, extensive athletic-training and medical facilities, spacious locker-room and lounge areas and a high-tech video room. The complex will also house the organization's entire front-office staff.
  • The first indoor ice rinks inside the Capitol Beltway in Virginia will help alleviate the ever-increasing demand for ice-time by hockey and skating groups in the region. Estimates also forecast the project will provide many economic benefits to the County by attracting additional patrons to area restaurants, hotels, and retail stores and generating additional taxes on the facility and revenue from its operation.
  • Approved by the County Board in 2004, the facility was funded by Arlington County through the sale of bonds and leased to the Capitals, who will operate the complex and manage all community programs. The parking garage will continue to be managed by Arlington.
  • The general contractor is D.C.-based Sigal Construction and the architect is Architecture, Inc. of Reston, VA.
  • Dedicated elevator from street level to the new 8th level is located next to the garage's exterior stairwell facing Glebe Road.
  • Other amenities include:
    • Skate rental
    • Eight locker rooms with showers
    • Pro shop for hockey and figure skating
    • Snack bar
    • Warm viewing areas
    • Direct access to Ballston Common Mall via main bank of elevators and new internal mall stairwell
    • Year-round programming
    • Public skating sessions
    • Learn-to-skate programs
    • Capitals practices open to public
    • Additional parking for 192 vehicles on the new 8th level
