BSTA Programs
BSTA will offer engaging programs on timely topics in science and technology. Demonstrations and exhibitions of technology and science will be presented to the general
public in an exciting manner. People will convene with a commitment to engagement, discovery, learning and innovation.
Café Scientifique
Café Scientifique is an updated version of salons of the 17th and 18th century. The French made food and drink a requirement along with the discussion of science and
technology and their impact on society. The British formalized concept in 1998 and started over 30 cafes throughout the UK. The idea is to promote public engagement with
science and to make science accountable. The goal is to be more informal and accessible than a public lecture. Audiences consist of people who are interested in science
and technology, but generally have never had the opportunity to discuss their views with and ask questions of someone “in the know.” Audience should be able to see and hear
each other as well as the speaker. The setting is a relaxed and informal one with food and drinks available. The speaker, ordinarily one but sometimes several speakers,
takes about 20 minutes to introduce the subject (with words or pictures, no PowerPoint). It is then followed by an hour or so of discussion and Q&A. The speaker is
encouraged to poise questions to the audience as well to simulate dialogue. In short it is a place to eat, drink and talk about science!
Short presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. The current location is at the atrium in the National Science Foundation (NSF) building in cooperation with The Front Page
Restaurant, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington between Wilson Boulevard and Fairfax Drive, and one block south of the Ballston-Marymount University Metro stop on the
Orange Line. More information
