Development

Arlington is the poster community for smart growth. In 2002, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected Arlington as "Best Overall" in terms of smart growth policies and results. The community is committed to smart growth, sustainability, and inclusion. Plans for community growth involve not only mixed-use transit-oriented development, but also neighborhood conservation and one of the country's premier programs in affordable housing.

Arlington is anything but boring. New development is everywhere, but it is not the same everywhere. The Metro submarkets are pioneering some of the most innovative projects in the country such as the mixed retail/residential projects at Market Common at Clarendon and Pentagon Row - both winners of prestigious Urban Land Institute national awards. The Avalon at Arlington Square redevelopment also received an award from the Washington Business Journal as the project with the greatest "community impact" in the region, for the creation of live-work units and the inclusion of a major affordable housing component in this mixed-income redevelopment.

Shirlington tills new ground with the development of a new library/theater complex and a long-term strategy to create an "arts village" in this older suburban district. Finally, the Columbia Pike Revitalization project is one of the first in the nation to use form-based coding as the fundamental element of the revitalization plan. This highly ethnic community will be able to redevelop many key properties within the scale of the form-based code, adding quality development to an area in need of reinvestment.

Innovation and sound implementation have led to successful development in Arlington, all tied to the community's commitment to smart growth, environmental sustainability, and inclusion.
