AED Hosts Grand Opening for BRAC Transition Center in Crystal City
WHAT: Arlington Economic Development (AED) proudly hosts a grand opening, ribbon-cutting ceremony for the BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) Transition Center, an Arlington County resource for BRAC-affected workers and businesses. The event includes speeches from key influencers and developers, the ribbon cutting and a sneak peak of the adjacent Boeing retail store. The BRAC Transition Center is the first of its kind across the country, offering services and collaboration with regional partners to assist workers and businesses affected by the forthcoming BRAC transition.
WHY: Since Arlington is the most affected jurisdiction in the entire country by the 2005 BRAC decisions, it means the potential loss of nearly 4 million square feet of leased space and more than 17,000 jobs in the county, primarily Crystal City. The BRAC Transition Center, the first center to address the needs of civilian employees, was developed to solve Arlington's unique BRAC-related challenges and create new business opportunities.
WHO: Grand opening speakers include: Virginia National Defense Industrial Authority; Office of Economic Adjustment; Paul Ferguson, chairman, Arlington County Board; and Jay Fisette, member, Arlington County Board Invited - but unconfirmed - Virginia elected officials include Gov. Mark Warner, Congressman Jim Moran, Congressman Tom Davis, Sen. John Warner and Sen. Jim Webb.
